Mission

To improve the health of the Boulder community, enhance the education, harmony and welfare of our Boulder County Medical Society (BCMS) members, and promote the science and art of medicine in Boulder County.

Values

BCMS believes that to fulfill our mission we need to conduct the business with integrity, transparency, responsibility, professionalism, honesty, openness, and support a diversity of perspectives to create rich and nuanced conversations regarding physicians and health in Boulder.

About the Boulder County Medical Society

The Boulder County Medical Society (BCMS) has served as the professional home for physicians in Boulder County since its founding in August 1952, during a period of rapid growth and transformation in the region.

Founding and Early Years (1950s–1960s)

BCMS was established as a 501(c)(6) professional membership organization in 1952 to support physicians, strengthen collaboration, and improve public health across Boulder County.

Its founding coincided with a pivotal moment in Boulder’s history.

The early 1950s brought new infrastructure, research institutions, and population growth, increasing demand for coordinated, high-quality medical care. Physicians recognized the need for a formal organization to:

  • Share clinical knowledge and advances in medicine

  • Establish referral networks and professional standards

  • Provide a unified voice for physicians in the community

From its earliest days, BCMS organized educational meetings, physician collaboration, and public health initiatives, helping define the structure of local medical practice.

Growth Alongside the Community (1970s-1990s)

As Boulder County evolved into a hub for education, technology, and innovation, BCMS grew in parallel—supporting physicians navigating:

  • Advances in medical science and specialization

  • Expansion of healthcare systems and facilities

  • Increasingly complex regulatory and insurance environments

During these decades, BCMS strengthened its role as a connector—bringing together physicians across specialties to foster professional relationships and shared standards of care.

Its alignment with the Colorado Medical Society by becoming a “Component Society” further positioned BCMS physicians within broader statewide advocacy efforts, ensuring that local voices contributed to shaping healthcare policy.

Advancing Medicine and Community Health (2000s–2020s)

Entering the 21st century, BCMS continued to evolve to meet the changing needs of both physicians and the community. The organization expanded its focus to include:

  • Physician wellness and professional support

  • Community health education and outreach

  • Public health advocacy on critical issues

A defining milestone came with the creation of the Boulder County Medical Society Foundation in 2023, a charitable 501(c)(3) organization designed to extend the Society’s impact beyond membership services into direct community benefit.

The Foundation’s inaugural initiative—the Opioid Awareness Project—reflects BCMS’s ongoing commitment to addressing urgent public health challenges through education, prevention, and community engagement.

BCMS Today

Today, the Boulder County Medical Society remains a vital, physician-led organization dedicated to:

  • Improving the health of the Boulder community

  • Supporting the education, connection, and well-being of physicians

  • Promoting the science and art of medicine

Through regular educational programs, community initiatives, and physician engagement opportunities, BCMS continues to serve as both a professional anchor and a catalyst for innovation in local healthcare.

A Legacy of Physician Leadership

For more than seven decades, BCMS has reflected the core values of the medical profession—service, collaboration, and a commitment to advancing health for all.

From its founding in 1952 to its work today, the Society remains grounded in a simple but enduring principle: when physicians come together, communities are stronger and healthier .
